The grand finale of the IITM Music Club's 40th anniversary. It was just out of the world with the veteran musician in great form.
The main sahAnA was a solid one hour with a very gripping and classical AlApanai that had the right measure of gamakkam laden phrases and minimal brigas to fit the mood of the rAgam. The kriti was rendered with a lot of bhavam and grandeur. The neraval at 'gAchedananu tyAgarAja vinutuni' was arousing the musical mind to otherwise unexplored realms and the svarams were so fitting too.
The main piece was so engrossing and occupied the mind to that extent that one has to go back to the list of songs to recollect what else was there in the concert. The khamAs AlApanai was very grippy and right then, i got a feeling this was going to be a concert of a life time. The sahAnA which came following was only to prove me right.
The AlApanais of pUrvikalyANi and charukEsi were both very good. The svarams in chArukEsi were good with the usual vyavahAram that one enjoys with somebody like TNS.
All the kritis that were rendered seemed to be carefully chosen and many of them are rare numbers in concert circuit these days.
When the great master is in peak form, the accompanists are better off to let him enjoy and present all that he wants to. The violinst of the day, chose to enjoy the music and keep a low key and gave very short and sweet responses to let the main artist continue to mesmerise the audience with his engulfing sahAnA.
The percussion department was also very elegantly handled. The mrudangist chose to accompany in a rather accomodative fashion and played in perfect tandem with whatever was being performed. The kanjira vidwan chose to follow suit with the mrudangist and they shared a very good tani.
In all, from the 3+ hours concert i will remember the sahAnA for a long long long time.
