The concert began with a brisk rendition of the sriranjani kriti with a fitting round of svarams. The AlApanai of hamIrkalyANi was done well. The kriti was rendered in a striking fashion.

sAvEri Alapanai was done in a fashion bringing all the beauty of the rAgam. The violinst gave a fitting reply. The kriti, a not so often heard piece, was rendered with elaborate neraval and svarams. The short sketch of kannaDa was exciting. The kriti was rendered very beautifully. The violinst followed like a shadow. The mridangist provided good support also.

The main AlApanai of nATTakuranji was very elaborate and showed many nuances of the rAgam and explored the rAgam quite thoroughly. The violinst gave a real nice reply. The kriti was rendered with an elaborate round of svarams and korappu. The mridangist was very accomodative in playing for the slow piece and played a nice tani. The jAvaLi came with a good flair providing a good ending to the concert.

The three young musicians were good in their respect. They seem to be very promising for the future years to come.

When one goes to attend concerts of senior vidwans and vidhushis, one can always expect some not-so-popular-yet-very-beautiful pieces of the trinity and some googly alapanais and all that. they dont let u down on those expectations usually. From the varnam to the tukkada, they maintain the high quality of music and dont compromise on anything. this evening's recital was a perfect example of that.

Smt Varadachari's neraval and svarams at 'tamasAdi guNa rahituDu dharmAtmuDu sarvasamuDu' were very nice. Her elaboration of darbAr was very beautiful and made one expect a rare piece. Smt. Rajagopalan on the fiddle gave a good reply. The kriti was rendered with quite a few sangatis and was a grand one. It was nice of Smt. Varadachari to leave the kriti without neraval and svarams. It left a better impact. The aTANA kriti was real good also.

The elaboration of vAcaspati was done in a scholarly fashion. The kriti was rendered with a quick round of neraval and svarams at 'alanADu saumitri pAda sEvA'. The main bhairavi AlApanai was very elaborate and enjoyable. Smt. Rajagopalan also played a nice AlApanai. The piece was rendered with a fitting round of neraval and svarams at 'nIla nIrada sarIra dhIradhara'.

Smt. Varadachari gave a very pleasing concert and made an impact on the rasikas. Smt. Rajagopalan gave fitting replies to all the main artist. Sri Satish Kumar was to the occasion all thro. His playing for each kriti was so accomodative and gelling to the piece that was rendered. His tani was very good also. Sri Sivaramakrishnan was good.

madhyamAvati short sketch

Two special concerts on two consecutive days. Still high on the kAmbhOji and darbAr and kuntaLAvarALi of Chingleput Sri Ranganathan, from the previous day, one entered Ragasudha Hall to be hear another doyen of carnatic music. Smt Swaminathan, (or kalpakam mami as she is affectionately refered to) was the artist of the day.

The concert began with a varNam in hindOLam. The gauLa kriti was followed by a quick round of svarams, which were well patterned. The AndhALi kriti was rendered in a moving fashion. The next was the bhairavi svarajathi. The majestic kriti got the best treatment in the hands of the veteran vainika.

The first AlApanai of the day was a moving Arabhi. The kriti was rendered with a quick round of svarams. The pUrvikalyANi was elaborated showing all the rAga bhAvam. The tAnam played was Smt Padmavathi was good. The kriti couldnt get rarer or heavier. Quick neraval was done at 'pancAkshara mantra rUpam prasanna rUpam'.

The quick AlApanai of AbhEri was followed by a rich rendition of the kriti. The rishabapriyA AlApanai, by Smt Padmavati, was the next in line with the kriti to follow.

The tODi AlApanai, was very elaborated and showed very many classical phrases all thro' it. The tAnam was amazing. The rendition of the grand kriti was just stunning. The neraval and svarams at 'alanADu kanakakashipu niNDAru' were quick and enjoyable.

The senjuruTTi AlApanai was elaborate and the kriti was rendered beautifully. The tillAnA and the rAgamAlikA mangaLam were both nice to hear as well.

Smt Swaminathan gave a truly amazing concert. The effect of her bhairavi and tODi joined to haunt me with the hangover of the previous day.

Smt Padmavathi provided valuable support to her guru. Sri Kumar played well and in anticipation to whatever the main artist played. His tani was short and sweet.

Chingleput Sri Ranganathan gave a concert in memory of his guru, Alathur Subbayyar. He said the songs he presented were all favourites to Late SVK of Nada Inbam also, and hence he sang them all at the concert. All of them very classical and were presented in the most classical fashion.

The concert started with a leisurely rendition of the varNam, which i hadnt even heard off before. A real classical varNam that was portraying the rAga bhAvam in full. The gauLa kriti was rendered well with a quick round of svarams. Sri Ravi's replies were good. The bEgaDa kriti was rendered with all its caraNams and the ciTTai svaram and was beautiful.

The first AlApanai, sAvEri, was kept short and sweet. The kriti was rendered with a round of neraval and svarams at 'shyAmakrishNa sOdari shyAmaLE sAdOdari'. Sri Ravi also played a short AlApanai and played good for the neraval and svarams as well. The AlApanai of darbAr was moving and made on sit up. The grand kriti was rendered in a moving fashion. The accompanists did a very good job in accompanying this grand kriti

When Sri Ranganathan started the AlApanai of kAmbhOji, just after an hour into the concert, one did not expect to hear the main AlApanai that early. It was very elaborate and showed all the beauties of the rAgam. Sri Ravi played a nice AlApanai in return. The AlApanai had already set the mood for a big kriti. However, one did not expect something this grand to come and hit u. The 20 minute rendition of the kriti, that too after rendering the caraNam lines just once, was just majestic. I am short of words to write about the kAmbhOji and the kriti. The neraval and svarams which followed at 'karuNatO dhruvuni kEDuta nilcina' were fitting to the grandeur of the kriti. The accompanists were good in accompanying for this. The tani Sri Ananthakrishnan played was quite elaborate and nice. The whole kAmbhOji affair and the tani lasted for about an hour.

Right after the tani, all of us were hit by a surprise. An AlApanai of kuntaLa varALi for about 5+ minutes. The way Sri Ranganathan elaborated the rAgam, made me even expect a pallavi in kuntaLa varALi. Sri Ravi responded well. The viLamba kAla kriti in kuntaLAvarALi was rendered very nicely. The kriti alone took about 10 mintues. This was followed with some beautiful neraval and elaborate svarams at 'dAra sutulakai dhanamunakai'.

The rAgamAlikA slOkam was very nice. The sindhubhairavi kriti was well rendered as well.

The concert was one to cherish for a life time.
