Hence, the compositions upto the main item were in other tALams such as cApu and dEsadi. The tukkaDa section also saw tALams which are very rare. A very informative and innovative presentation.

It was a very vibrant concert from the start. A concert from a veteran musician was always going to be special. Some people are so good in what they do that even what they consider as normal would produce phenomenal results and give wonderful products. Artists like Smt. Suguna was are so well versed with what they do and whatever they sing ought to be brilliant. They would probably not need any special efforts to embellish their music, since it is all present already. That said here is not to comment about the preparation or capability of the artist, but, it is only to mention this writer's view of the music and to only try and portray the concert in some words. How much ever written would be rather insufficient though.

That said, this concert started off with an I-have-not-heard-off-varNam in kalyANi, set to aTa tALam. This was a grand varNam rendered with a lot of gait and it was wonderful to have such pieces presented during a concert. While familiar numbers are always enjoyed, new pieces are always welcome. Restricting to known items is a way to build a cocoon. This is never going to let one see the world. The one-avartana svarams in srI ragam, were very well planned and the sancaras where built well. The singing of a few slOkas from lalitA sahasranama in the same rAga was novel and was done in a emotive manner. The song was great. The neraval at the anupallavi line was rather special. It was very elaborate and showed all the ways of handling neraval and the ragam. The swarams were superb too. The Anandabhairavi AlApanai was awesomeness. Showcasing the rAgam in all this nuances. The main AlApanai of shankarAbaraNam was majestic. An awesomely racy exploration of the rAgam was presented. This was tooo good. An apt crown for the steps traversed with the previously presented items.

The accompanists of the day were wonderful. Their playing was apt. The team's presentation was enchanting. The lalitA neraval was a take-home-lesson. One wanted to not listen to any music for a few days just to soak-in all that had to be absorded. Though this is written after 8 days, the memory of the concert and each of the phrases is so fresh. Such was the music. May one be blessed to listen to such music as much possible.

Season 2012

I had a rather different season this time. Attended far few concerts this season than many previous years. And for some reason, forgot to write down songlists during some concerts and misplaced some of them sheets when I did write down. Originally one wasnt planning to make a post here and hence wasnt really keen on keeping lists, however, felt very bad for not being part of the group here and therefor, have a few full lists here and points/items from my memory for the others.

After Seshampatti Sri Sivalingam's concert at BVB, one took a long hiatus.

Heard Smt. Nanditha Ravi's concert at Ragasudha Hall. A well presented concert representing one of the old traditions of classical music. One then attended concerts of Smt. Suguna Varadachari and Smt. Ritha Rajan at Ragasudha Hall on the 17th and 18th of December 2012. Both were great concerts. As usual with the great vidushis, they were concerts of pure  classical music out-and-out. Smt. Suguna's kalyani AlApanai and kAntimatim were both wonderful. The main of the evening, tuLasi bilva with neraval at karuNatO was so moving. Smt. Ritha's renditions of the shankarAbaraNam and bEgaDa padams (mAnamE bhUshaNamu and yAlapadarE) were both stunning and so was the nATTaikuranji jAvaLi (tArumAru). Earlier her suruTTi AlApanai and angArakam in the old-world-version in cauka kAlam were amazing.

Was a classical concert. The grand beginning was so wonderful with srI rAjagOpAla. The gauri manOhari AlApanai was great. The classical AbhEri (that with suddha dhaivatam) was a grand affair with an elaborate AlApanai, neraval and svarams at 'jagamElE paramAtmA'. The kAmbhOji AlApanani was wonderful and the tAnam was very moving. It was a superb pallavi fitting the occasion of 'vaikunTa EkAdasi'

Heard Trichur brothers and Prasanna Venkataraman at Music Academy. Trichur brothers sang dAchukOvalEnA. Prasanna's lalitA was moving. Heard Aishwarya Vidya Raghunath at Kapali Fine Arts. She sang O jagadambA for submain and O rangasAyee for main. It was a well presented concert which ended with Ahiri padam. Sri T N Krishnan's concert at Raga Sudha began with kAmbhOji varnam. The teratIyagarAdhA was great. 'dinamani vamsa' and 'paridAnamicchidE' were played well as well. After listening to Smt. Vedavalli's kAmbhOji, Prasanna's harikAmbhOji and mOhanam and Aishwarya's kEdAragauLa (varNam) and kAmbhOji, TNK's kambhOji, harikAmbhOji and bilahari in quick succession, it was a long string of same and/or related ragams and one just couldnt sit anymore. I m told TNK played mohanam for main.

The kAmbhOji padam was superb and the kuranji padam was just out of the world was a really rare treat. A touching concert.

Thamarakkadu Govindan Namboodri's concert at Raga sudha hall was awesome. His mAkElarA was perfect and superb. The danyAsi Alapanai and mAyuranAtam were both so wondeful. The aTANA AlApanai and srI kumAra nagarAlayE were awesome. The main was mari mari ninnE left one spellbound. Indeed a great concert.
Thanks to bad health, that was the last concert for me this season.

Its my bad that i missed noting down concert lists and don't remember what was sung in many of them. Hope to have a better season next time. Hope floats!

It was a great concert. Two musicians of himalayan stature coming together meant it was a jackpot and had nothing short of a great concert. The kritis were all rendered very movingly. The AlApanai of rItigaula by Smt. Varadachari was very elaborate and fitting to the kriti. The AlApanai of shankarAbaraNam by Smt. Purushottaman was majestic. The neraval and svarams were all shared by both the vocalists and rendered in a very classical fashion. The accompanists were good and played well for the occasion.

For such a combo, one expected a longer concert and was thoroughly dissappointed with a quick less-than-two-hours affair. One was left wanting more of the great music from the two stalwarts.

It was a fantastic concert. All the pieces were carefully selected and presented amazingly well with a lot of bhavam and weight. The AlApanais were all very elaborate and included lots of classical phrases. The neraval & svarams were measured and rendered fitting for the pieces taken up. The accompanists were wonderful and played excellently for the occasion.

With an absolutley un-co-operative throat, Smt. Suguna still pulled off a concert of classical music of the highest order. Vintage music that I enjoyed thoroughly.

It was a grand concert. With all the 5 big ragams coming one after another and all grand pieces chosen to apty present the rAgams, it was a class apart. with the kriti renditions being as heavy as they need to be and matching manOdarmam added it was only a concert that could linger in the minds of those who attended and one that would vibrate in the surroundings of the hall for quite a long time.

Smt Varadachari began with an invocatory hayagrIva slOkam in a very moving shankarAbaraNam. The Adi tALa varNam which followed, a personal favourite, was superbly rendered. The tODi was quite fast and yet had the essentialities of the rAgam displayed aptly with a good round of svarams. The svarams were alternately sung to 'gangA', 'kAvEri' and 'danushkOTi'.

By the time tODi was finishing, i had a gut feeling that this concert is going to be different. Once, the kalyANi began, i was sure it is going to rain heavy ragams and was even convinced that Musiri School favourites, nI pAdamulE and tiruvaDi charaNam are going to come one after the another and probably a pallavi too in kharaharapriyA.

However it was not so and things only got better as we kept listening. On some days, one can exactly predict the songs and rAgams and others, one is totally off beat. It turned out to be somewhere in the middle that day, with the rAgams coming but not the kritis.

The kalyANi AlApanai was very classical and was well built and moving. The kriti was rendered with neraval and svarams at 'AdarinchuDakidi manchi samayamu' which were totally fitting with the mood of the kriti and only adding more to the concert. The bhairavi kriti was rendered with a beautiful short sketch and nice tricky set of svarams to 'bhairavi prasangam'.

It was only about an hour since the concert started that Smt. Varadachari started a leisurely kAmbhOji. The next 10 or so min was a grand, majestic, classical, elaborate, slow, meditative, soothing, punchy, superb, i-am-short-of-words kAmbhOji AlApanai. I was not bothered of which kriti is going to come as i was totally immersed in the kAmbhOji. The violin return was equally fitting and only made one long for more. The grand kriti was rendered with absolute classicism and all the progressive sangatis were fully rendered. The neraval at 'ninnu minchina deivamu lEdani' was totally out of the world. The svarAs that followed were all the more beautiful. With the short tani, it was atleast about an hour or so of just kAmbhOji vibrating around the full hall. The rAgamAlikA slOkam and songs that followed, including a quick jAvaLi, were all presented in a nice fashion.

Now come the accompanists. Sri Shriram Kumar was only following the main artist like a shadow. His kriti renditions were totally matching and the manOdramam replies were apt and crisp and totally subdued to highlight the main artist. Sri Arun Prakash was the perfect Mrudangist one could have got for the concert. With his impeccable sense of anticipation, be it kriti renditions or manOdarmam parts, it was all one, truly mixed and merged with the music that was being presented by the main artist. Kum. Vidya Kalyanaraman provided very good vocal support to her guru and also sang few phrases of the kAmbhOji AlApanai in the upper registers.

On the whole, it was one of those concerts that I find it difficult to express in words. I am sure I will remember it for years.

It was a very classical concert. All the pieces were rendered with a lot of bhavam and the manodarma parts were all very good as well.

I reached a little late, during the yadukula kAmbhOji AlApanai. The AlApanai of yadukulakAmbhOji was good. The simmEndra madhyamam was a truly classical affair. It was given a punchy start and each phrase was interwoven so methodically and classically the outcome was one of the unforgettable elaborations of the ragam in recent times. Personally I felt it was the best pick of the day's concert. The madhyamAvati AlApanai was great. The pieces were all rendered with the traditional gait and the manodarma parts were all very inspiring. It was interesting choice of kritis and ragams that made it a great concert. The accompanists were very good and played in perfect anticipation.

It was a great concert.

PS: The kApi piece by Smt. Suguna Purushottaman, has the same tune as 'parulanna mATa' and has lyrics which are in the same mood as the original composition, except for the language. Smt. Suguna Varadachari specially mentioned this after the piece.

It was a brilliant concert. Each piece rendered with all the necessary gait. All the AlApanais were very crisp and all the phrases were very moving. Some of the vintage phrases were very enjoyable. The neraval svarams that were rendered were all very punchy also. The renditions of nIlAmbari, tODi, bauLi kritis stood out. The accompanists were good and played with good sense to add to the overall pleasing effect of the concert.

The evening started with a panel discussion on Smt. Mani Krishnaswamy. Participating in the discussion were Sri SR Janakiraman, Sri T R Subramanian, Sri B M Sundaram, Chingleput Sri Ranganathan, Sri N V Subramanian, Ms. Sundari, Smt Suguna Purushottaman and Smt Suguna Varadachari. They all spoke about the various facets of Smt Mani Krishnaswamy. As Dr VV Srivatsa was ill, Sri B M Sundaram also moderated the discussions. Sri Srinivasan of NadopAsana also spoke on the occasion and Sri M K Sudarashan proposed the vote of thanks. Smt Suguna Purushottaman and Smt Suguna Varadachari also presented a composition on Smt Mani Krishnaswamy set to mOhana kalyANi and Adi tALam composed by Smt Suguna Purushottaman.

The concert which followed had only kritis being sung with no manOdarmam at all. Smt Suguna Purushottaman announced that this will not be a regular concert and they would present pieces that were Smt. Mani Krishnaswamy's favourites and those they learnt together. The kritis were rendered in such a grand fashion that one did not feel the absence of any manOdarmam. The accompanists were good.

That was an amazing concert. All AlApanais were awesome. The kritis were all majestic and rendereing amazingly. The opening piece in nATTai was beautiful. The bindumAlini piece was rendered with a kAkali nishAdam, as a janyam of sUryakAntam. The AbhOgi kriti was followed up with a quick round of svarams.

The first elaborate AlApanai for the evening was a moving sahAnA. The kriti, a rare tyAgarAja number, was rendered soulfully with a fitting round of svarams with the bilahari piece to follow. The AlApanai of hEmavati started off unambiguously and was developed very beautifully. The kriti was rendered with elaborate neraval and svarams as "sukha saunakAdi sadA ArAdithAm suddha tAmraparaNi taTastitAm". The quick kuntaLavarALi was followed by a grand tODi. The AlApanai was amazing. It was developed very carefully and the kriti followed was rendered beautifully with a lot of intricate sangatis, to followed with elaborate neraval and svarams at "sAreku nI hrdayAravinda munanu". The two utsava sampradaya kritis were also rendered beautifully to lead to the mangaLam.

The scholarly vidwat of Smt Suguna Varadachari was evident thro' her concert. Each piece rendered with utmost perfection and the necessary amount of gait and each phrase perfectly falling in place.

Smt Padma Shankar ably supported the main artist on the violin. Her replies were all perfect and matched up. Her solo versions and the accompanying were both very good. Sri Sivakumar on the mridangam played with good anticipation and added a nice flavour to all the compositions presented.
