A wonderful concert it was to begin the 40th anniversary series of the music club.

The beginning with a rare varNam in shankarAbaraNam was very appropriate and rendered well. The jaganmOhini quickie was a perfect prelude to the leisurely nAyaki that followed. The kalyANi was very well developed and portrayed very classically. rAgavardhani was sublime and quick ravicandrikA kriti, with 3 different cittai svarams led to the main piece of the evening.

kEdAragauLa was elaborated with a lot of vigour and presented very well. The AlApanai and tAnam were both beautifully done. The pallavi simple and sweet and sang wonderfully.

The viruttams and thiruppugazh were all very nice too.

The accompanists were very good and gave fitting replies.

It was a wonderful concert to begin the series at iitm

appan avadarittha - kharaharapriyA - Adi - PS
nI nAma rUpamulaku - saurashTram - Adi - T

Superb concert it was. From the varNam it was totally classical and enjoyable. All the kritis were rendered beautifully. The neraval and svarams at ' ADina ninnADavale gApADina ninnu pADavalegA' for the bhairavi kriti were good. The kalyANi kriti was awesome, and so was the srI rAgam AlApanai that followed. The kAmbhOji affair was totally classical and very moving. Neraval and svarams were sung at 'chAru sarashchandra kalAdharaNEna'. The mukhAri was completely handled with a lot of care. Thus it was very enjoyable. Neraval and svarams were rendered at 'ItulEni malaya mArutamuce gUDina kAvEri taTamandu'. Just as one was preparing for an RTP after the tODi piece, there came a viruttam to shut the doors for a possible pallavi. However, the viruttam was very elaborate and very very moving. As he began a tAnam after the viruttam, one was getting back the hopes of a pallavi. However, the tiruppugazh poured cold water on the hopes for a pallavi. Still there were some really innovative and moving neraval and svarams at 'thIdillAda mEviya sEvaR kodiyOnE" and anulOma pratilOma were done also.

The vocalist was flowing thro' the concert. He was very creative and made everybody sit up and enjoy. The accompanists were excellent. The violinst was very good and gave fitting replies to everything. The mrudangist was very good and played very accomadatively. His tani was nice and had a very elaborate kOrvai to finish

tillAnA - dvijAvanti - Adi - Tanjore Kalyanaraman
nI nAma rUpamulaku - saurAshTram - Adi - T

It was nice concert. Though, organised in a rather-tough-to-reach place, the turn out was quite high, possibly due to local residents.

The AlApanais of aTANA, bEgaDa and kIravANi were all very good. The svarams in rItigauLa were nice. The neraval and svarams in bEgaDa was good also. The kIravANi svarams were nice, and a korappu in dvi-kAlam was presented. The short sketches of AbhEri (with suddha dhivatham) and nIlAmbari were quite inspiring as well. All the kritis were rendered very beautifully. A nice song selection and excellent execution. All the accompanists did a good job in making the concert a completely fulfilling one.

orumaiyuDan - ramalinga aDigaL tiruvartupA - kAmbhOji, sAvEri, shanmukhapriyA, kApi
nI nAma rUpamulaku - saurAshTRam - Adi - T

The concert began with the varNam in kadanakudukalam. Sri Sanjay's throat was rather not-so-co-operative when he began, however, it picked up, as the concert proceeded. The srIranjani kriti was nice.

As he began the bEgaDa AlApanai, his throat started to settle down and then it was just too good to listen to him, phrase after phrase. The kriti was rendered well with nice round of neraval and svarams. The kalAvati kriti was rendered soulfully.

The main mOhanam AlApanai and the kriti were good and reminded of MMI in many occasions. The svarams were good.

The sahAna short sketch and the kriti were good. The brindAvana sArangA AlApanai was awesome. It was very beautiful elaboration and the tAnam was built well. The pallavi, set by Sri Durai, was rendered well with anulOma, pratilOma and also singing in tisra naDai. It was rendered very well with nice set of svarams and a short tani. The rAgamAlikA viruttam and the subsequent rendering of the same in kApi were good. It was yet another concert to proove, why sanjay concerts keep the cash registers ringing.

Sri Muralidharan on the violin was good all over. He played in accordance to the kritis and gave fitting replies to Sanjay all thro' the concert. Sri Durai took proper care of the percussion department. He played well for all the kriti and also according to the sangatis. The tani was very nicely structured. Sri Venkatesh was good in parts.

mukthi aLikkum - navarOz - cApu - GKB
thiruppugazh - jOnpuri - Adi
nI nAma rUpamulaku - saurAshTRam - Adi - T

The concert started with a short sketch of nIlAmbari and the varNam was nicely rendered. The kalAnidi kriti with svarams at pallavi was good. The suruTTi kriti was presented neatly with neraval and svarams at 'dInarakshakam pUjita vaidhyanAta kshEtram'.

The first AlApanai of the evening was gauri manOhari. The AlApanai was done exceptionally well and the kriti was good as well. The yadukula kAmbhOji sketch and the kriti were moving and filled with bhavam. One was truly touched by the rendition.

tODi was treated elaborately to the right measure. The kriti was good and had good old tamil flowing. The svarams were beautiful and also had some intricate kaNakku. Some parts of tODi reminded one of the yesteryear nadasvara masteros.

The sahAnA short sketch and the kriti were good and the rare kalAvati kriti was good also. The mOhanam AlApanai was well structured and the rAgamAlikA parts of tAnam were very well done. The pallavi was nice. The usual anulOma-pratilOma and tisram were done. He sangs vilamba kAla svarams in tisra tripuTa and mEl kAlam in misra cApu. (reducing the tALam from tisra tripuTa to misra cApu)

It was quite refreshing to hear two extra caraNams of the swati tirunal kriti in pahADi and kOsalam other than the sindhu bhairavi one, which one usually gets to hear. The mAND kriti was nice and the navarOs peace was nicely rendered as well. The jonpuri thiruppugazh and pavamana led to curtains.

Sri Sanjay gave a really good concert. His voice was not at its best, but one could still feel the life in his music through the concert. One is not able to recollect any 'thoivu' in the concert.

Sri Gopinath was good in accompanying almost all thro' the concert. There were few parts were he could have done better.

Sri Arun Prakash did a amazing job in perfectly accompanying the main artist. His charecterestic playing for the kriti and actually playing according to the sangati was good. His tanis were good also.

nAdi tEdi - Bagheshri - tisra Adi - tiruppugazh
nI nAma rUpamulaku - saurAshTRam - Adi - tyAgarAja

kEdAram piece and the svarams were amazing, to say the least.

harikAmbhOji was started unambigously, but later had some kEdAram, kAmbhOji and khamAs influence, in some phrases. The violinst also suffered similar difficulties. This happens during AlApanai, neraval and svarams.

The tODi was not completely to its full capacity. Given the kriti taken, the AlApanai, neraval and svarams did full justice.

The hamIrkalyANi started as though it was kalyANi. It only after about 5-6 phrases, this ambiguity was cleared. The AlApanai and svarams were very good.

The Violinst provided very good suppot.

The mrudangist and ghatam artist were very vibrant and kept upto the beat, without even the slightest mistake. The tani was quite a enjoyable affair.

'siva saravaNabava kumarA kumaraguruparA muthukkumarA'
tALam: 15 aksharams. one kaNDa lagu with 2 svarams each, one drutam where the beat is in tisram, the veechu is 2 aksharams. (2 x 5) + (3 + 2) = 15. samam yeDuppu
dasarata suta - jOnpuri
teruvinil naDavA - suruTTi - dhuruva tALam - tiruppugazh
nI nAma rUpamulaku - saurAshtram

The opening nIlambari varNam was a rare piece and rendered well. The bhairavi kriti was rendered well and the svarams were well structured to include a nice korappu.

harikAmbhOji AlApanai started on a rather ambigous note with shades of khamAs and kAmbhOji showing up. It was well developed with the kriti rendered nicely. hamIrkalyANi also had a kalyANi-sArangA-ish starting but again was developed very well. The kriti again being well rendred.

nADADina mATa as it was started was more in the tempo of a filler, but then it was a bit of a surprise, being developed into a elaborate piece with extensive neraval and beautiful svarams and korappu and followed by a very entertaining tani.

sahAnA AlApanai opening created high expectations of a pallavi but was short lived with a fast round-up and the kriti was real good and rendered with a lot of bhavam. The dissappointment of a short sahAnA was short-lived also when sankarAbaraNam was taken up for elaboration. After a rather short AlApanai, in terms of an RTP, and a nice tAnam, when Sri. Sanjay started singing the pallavi, it was tough to understand the tALam and took a few aavarthanams to come to an understanding of the tALam. One kept wondering what it was called. The pallavi though in a tricky tALam was simple structured and Sanjay did not explore very extensively. It was a short pallavi and the accompanists did a excellent job in keeping to the Main Artist. There was a short tani for the pallavi and after that Sri. Sanjay said that this tALAm does not have a name and was conceived by a nAdasvara vidwan and explained the 15 svara pattern. He also added that he had not rehersed the pallavi with his accompanists and applauded them for keeping upto it.

Sri. Varadarajan on the violin did a very good job in accompanying the concert. His replies to Sanjay in all the AlApanais, neravals and svarams measured up to that of the main artist. Sri. Eswaran played a very supportive role in playing for the kriti being presented and also in tandem with the svara prastharams and neraval.

Though being a short 2 hour concert, it was indeed very enjoyable.

nI ninaindhAl AgAdathu - darbAri kAnaDa - Adi
nI nAma rUpamulakku

The opening short kAnaDa AlApanai was structured to indicate a kriti and not a varNam, the kriti was well rendered and so where neraval and svaras.

kannaDA was very well handled by the team. The mukhAri AlApanai was definitely one amongst the best. The kriti was rendered well and so was the manodharmam, filled with devotion.

The hamsanandhi AlApanai made quite some faces see eachother for one does not like hamasAnandi in the middle of concert and the is usually expected only the end of the concert. Sanjay did a good job with the alapanai and svarams.

The main shankarAbaraNam alapanai started off in a untraditional way and was built very well to suite the kriti. The neraval and svarams were well structured and the svarams especially had a lot of kanakku.

The post main session had a kharaharapriyA slOkam on ramA followed by jAnaki patE in the same rAgam. follwing to this was a good bEhAg AlApanai and the kriti was good also. The end of the day was a viruttam followed by nI ninaindAl in darbArikAnaDA.

Sri Varadarajan on the violin was good in most parts. Sri Ramadoss was good also...

Very good concert...

Sanjay, Parthasarathy Swami Sabha

Sanjay - Varadarajan - Kamalakar Rao

Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, Vidya Bharati, 25th December 6:30 pm

viribhONi - varNam - bhairavi
enna gAnu - kAmavardini - rUpakam - bhadrAcalam rAmadAsar (neraval and svarams at "rAma rAma rAma yanucu)
sArasadaLa nayanA - khamAs - catusra jhampai
brovabAramA - bahudAri (AlApanai and svarams)
sivakAma sundari - mukhAri - Sivan
gana naya dEsika - rishabapriya - Adi (2 kaLai) - kOtIsvara iyer
taniyAvartanam
aruNacala nAtam - sArangA
RTP (?) - bhairavi

The concert started on a good note with the bhairavi varNam being sung well. The kAmavardini piece and khamAs were not quite upto what one expects from Sri Sanjay.

The bahudAri AlApanai was very cheaply rendered with a lot of gimmicks and generous usage of m d n s phrases and the svarams were also very gimmicky and it was just jugglery all the way. Sri Varadarajan also followed thro' the whole affair just like his shade. (nizhal mAdiri)

After a rather good rendition of sivakAma sundari, the rishabapriyA was the next one to hit us all. It was started on a very very ambigous way. It sounded like charukEsi and vAcaspati mixed up and did not effort to get anywhere close to listenable music. The svarams which were overdone, again invovled a lot of jugglery and gimmicks, making it a flop.

The taniyAvaratanam was the best part of the concert. Sri Kamalakar Rao did a brilliant job with the mrudangam both while accompanying and in the tani.

aruNAcala nAtam was and its preceding AlApanai were a bit healing to all the damage the bahudAri and rishabapriya did. His bhairavi AlApanai was also quite dull and one could not sit in the auditorium any more.

It was on the whole a very mediocre concert.

On a more general note, this year again i felt that the venue is rather uncomfortable in terms of parking lots and seating arrangemnet and all that. The Acoustics are tolerable. I was again reminded of the old Parthasarathy Sabha Auditorium which once stood in Triplicane.

Sanjay, Mangalam Ganapathy Trust

Sanjay - Varadarajan - Arun prakash

Mangalam Ganapathy Trust at PS School Auditorium, Mylapore.

Sanjay gave a fitting tribute to all many composers during his concert on sunday evening. his vAtApi gaNapatim with swarams was good. his elaboration of chandrajyoti was real class. the kriti was "chandra jyoti prakAsa vadana"(details appreciated) with swarams at the pallavi line. yentha ninne was well sung with a lot of beautiful short swarams. His sAvEri was brilliant and a fitting tribute to Shyama sAstri with sankari samkurU. the main piece of the evening was "thiruvadi caraNam". the 20 minute alapanai was just good. the neraval and swarams also worth mentioning. The tukkada section had "kandena" by purandara dasar and "karpagame" by sivan amongst other pieces. Varadarajan had played well through the concert given good accompaniment and so was arun prakash. his tani also good.
