It was a good concert. The orthodox beginning with nAda tanumanisam was very nice. The neraval and svarams in cittaranjani were interesting to listen. The Alapanai of shankarAbaraNam was kept short and the kriti was very effectively rendered. The main sAramati was very elaborate and the kriti was rendered well with neraval at 'praNavanAda' and svarams.

The renditions of all the other kritis was very good and enjoyable. The accompanists were very good and added much to the enjoyment of the concert, by playing very appropriately.

the concert was good.

The varNam was rendered outstandingly. I thoroughly enjoyed his rendition. The pantuvarALi affair was his usual stuff and the mALavi was quite quick, both being good.

I was totally moved by the mukhAri. The grandeur with which he rendered the AlApanai, neraval and svarams, i was sureshot expecting it to be the main and a pallavi to follow.

Taking up 'O rangasAyI' was a total dissappointment for me in that regard. The kAmbhOji AlAapanai was however, handled very well. It was very good.

I had to leave during the main kriti.

sad that i missed the rAgamAlikA and sahAnA padam..

Akkarai Subhalakshmi was good overall. J Vaidhyanathan and BS Purushottaman were good as well.

mangaLa kOsalEndrAya - maNirangu

It was one of those concerts which would always linger in your mind.

The beginning was normal with the kalyANi varNam and the jayantasEna with usual rounds of svarams. The yadukulakAmbhOji AlApanai was my pick for the day. Hearing yadukulakAmbhOji at two succesive concerts just a day apart and with 2 favourite rare kritis was indeed a great feeling. Hearing ninnu sEvinchina, would have a very soothing effect on any triplicanite, and i am no exception to this. The neraval at 'kanakAngi srI rukmiNi...' did bring back the images of the thAyAr standing right next to Sri Parthasarathy Perumal. The varuNapriyA kriti was well rendered.

The bhairavi was indeed an elaborate affair. For a bhairavi fanatic like me, it was just a grand treat to hear the bhairavi. The kriti was rendered with neraval and svarams in kIzhkAlam alone. The next in line was a short sketch of AbhEri and vINAbhEri was rendered with the required gait.

The RTP was a surprise when Sri Krishna began with the AlApanai of nATTai. It was an elaborate AlApanai done in stages and the tAnam was indeed very well rendered with the percussion team joining in. The pallavi set with intricate eDuppu and placings of the sAhityam was rendered with utmost ease. The anulOmam was done to 2 kIzh kAlams as mEl kAlam would not be possible for the eDuppu to which the pallavi was set. Even the kIzh kAla svarams had to be carefully structured to lead to the eDuppu of the pallavi. The mEl kAla svarams and rAgamAlikA were rendered beautifully.

The paras jAvaLi was rendered in a rather slow tempo and with some short neraval in the caraNam. It was also quite interesting to note that yamunAkalyANi and maNirangu were not rendered in madhyama sruthi.

Sri Krishna gave an awesome concert. In Sri Shriram Kumar, one could find a perfect accompanying violinst. His AlApanais were all top class and his neraval and svarams replies were all fittingly done. Knowing all the kritis, he played them like a shadow and hence added to the overall effect the concert created.

Sri TV Vasan, the mrudangist of the day, was energy personified. The way he embellished each piece and sangati was indeed amazing. I m also told, he played a few of the ghaTam patterns on the mrudangam making it all the more beautiful. (experts in the percussion department could elaborate and educate on what are the differences in playing mrudangam and ghaTam). Sri Anirudh was in good form and played well and gave good patterns from his playing. The tani they shared was very good as well.

It was an amazing concert. One is short of words to express the feelings. each piece out showed one another.

The varNam was rendered very nicely. The short sketch of Arabhi was quite nice. The svarams were beautiful as well. The danyAsi AlApanai was just stunning. Some of the phrases were absolutely out of the world. The kriti was rendered beautifully with amazing neraval in trikAlam at 'sura ripu damana kumAra janani, karuNArasAkshi kaumAriyani sada'. The kalAvati kriti was quite emotive. For the main, madhyamAvati was elaborated very extensively showing all the nuances of the rAgam. The kriti was rendered very beautifully. Neraval was done in kIzh kAlam and sama kAlam alone at 'kAntamaku peru...'. After kalpanai svarams in kIzh kAlam with a korappu to thAra shadjam and kOrvai, Sri Sankaran and Sri Raja Ganesh played a very elaborate tani having all the naDais and a viLamba kAla korappu. Following the tani, were mEl kAla svarams and a korappu and kOrvai. After this, there was ultra short tani for about 5-6 Avarthanams predominantly in the dhurita kAlam.

The slOkam immortalised by SSI, was rendered very beautifully. It was quite a surprise to hear srI mAtrubUtam with svarams after the tani. It was very nice as well. The bEhAg was good. The majestic tamizh padam was given due justice and rendered very beautifully. The jAvaLi and tillAnA and the tirupugazh were all nice as well.

Sri Krishna made every person sit and listen thro' the concert. There was a very deep classical touch thro' the concert. The kalpitam and manOdarmam were both astounding.

Sri Chandramouli was great. His playing for the kritis was nice. His replies during AlApanai, neraval and svarams were all on par with that of the main artist, adding to the goodness index.

Sri Sankaran was just tooo good. His playing for each kriti, each line, each sangati, was so appropriate and the anticipation was amazing. His tanis had a mix of all the naDais and a some really beautiful patterns. Sri Raja Ganesh was very good in supporting the veteran.

nice concert. TMK announced that his choice of kritis is bound by a list given by the organisers and he will sing as much as he can from the list. The svarams in mAyAmaLavagauLa were amazing and were very highly creative. The AlApanai of dEvagAndhAri and mukhAri were both done in a leisurely fashion with no hurry and it was a total viLamba kAla affair thro' the concert. The neraval in kharaharapriyA and mukhAri were good also. The svarams were as usual of TMK, long sarvalaghu patterns and were well interwoven. Accompanists did a good job.

The concert was on the theme, 'the five elements' or the 'pancha bhUta'. The artist hence chose to present the five pancha bhUta kshEtra kritis of Dikshitar at the concert.

The concert began with the mangaLam slOkam, appropriate to the theme of the concert, rendered in mAyAmALavagauLa and kEdAram. The kEdAram kriti was rendered nicely with a elaborate round of neraval and svarams at 'saNgItavAdya vinOdatANDavajAta bahutara bhEdacOdyam'. The fiddle vidwan was following like a shade and gave amazing replies.

The husEni kriti was sung in a very moving fashion and a elaborate round of svarams were sung at the pallavi line. The svara prastaram was very inspiring. The sArangA AlApanai was done in a fashion fitting the dIkshitar kriti, incorporating special prayOgam used by dIkshitar with the kriti to follow. The violinst was good in playing for the song. The percussion dept also made the kriti more enjoyable.

While i was expecting a bhairavi main, i was rather surprised to hear an AlApanai which was barely 5 minutes. The shorter 4 min reply from violinist, made one wonder what was in store. The kriti was rendered in a rather slow tempo, compared to the popular version in vogue. The round of svarams at 'maNgaLakara mandahAsa vadanam' was short and sweet.

Then came the amazing AlApanai of shankarAbaraNam. It was really fantastic AlApanai. It had quite a few SSI-benchmarked-phrases incorporated into it. The violinst also made a nice portrayal of the rAgam. The tAnam was amazing also with both the vocalist and violinst making some good exchanges. The pallavi was rendered in a grand manner and was aptly set in accordance to the theme of the day. It was rendered quite elaborately with anulOma pratilOma and the rAgamAlika svarams. The Mridangam and Ghatam vidwans were visibly quite happy to be playing for such a pallavi, in a not so popular tALam. The tani they shared for about 15 minutes was definetely very different to hear and many students of percussion must have benefitted from the patterns that were played. They played a korappu to the start of the pallavi line and also a 2 Avarthana mOhra at the end of the tani.

The yamunA piece was rendered in a amazing manner with all the grandeur and majesty associated with the piece. The concert ended with a newly composed mangaLam, that was composed for the occasion by the violinist of the day.

A very fullfilling concert to remember for sometime. I only hope they release the audio and video of the concert, in CDs or something. It would be a collector's item to store.

The concert began with a brisk rendition of rAju vEdalE (a kriti about Sri Ranganathar's utsavam) with some nice neraval and svarams. The short sketch of nArAyaNagauLa was very distinct and unambiguous. The kriti was rendered amazingly well. The pAsuram in varALi was rendered very beautifully, taking every enjoyable sancaram in varALi and weaving it into the pAsuram. The thiruppAvai was rendered with a round of svarams. Personally, i was expecting a tani right after this.

The naLinakAnti AlApanai, came next. The kriti was rendered well. The main sAvEri AlApanai was rendered very beautifully. The AlApanai demanded a kriti as heavy as rAma bANa or srI rAjagOpala to follow. It was rAma bANa. The neraval was done nicely in trikAlam. I would have personally prefered a round of svarams in sAvEri rather than the 3 tukkaDas which followed.

T M Krishna gave a truely classical concert filled with weighty compositions rendered with a good vigour for the TNK foundation. He had carefully chosen some of the pieces popularly sung by SSI and one guesses they were all TNK favourites.

The concert started with a brisk rendition of the mAyAmALavagauLa kriti with a quick round of neraval at 'jAtarUpa...' and a nice set of svarams. The chAyAtaraNgiNi kriti was rendered to build up to the tempo.

The next was a short AlApanai of karnATaka kApi, which was presented well and for those who wondered why there wasnt a varNam in the concert, here came one. The piece was rendered with a lot of bhAvam. As Sri Krishna was beginning the first line of the mAnji piece, somebody in the first row (Sri T N Krishnan presumably) in the first row asked him for an AlApanai of the Ragam. The AlApanai was rendered in a very nice fashion showing differences between its close cousins. The kriti was rendered beautifully with a nice set of svarams.

The suruTTi AlApanai was done very nicely and the kriti was rendered very well. Some of the phrases were very enjoyable. The main shankarAbaraNam AlApanai was done in a very classical fashion. The phrases were weaved one after another in beautiful patterns. The kriti was rendered nicely with beautiful neraval and svarams at 'vEda sAstra tatvArtamulu thelisi'. The senjuruTTi jAvaLi and the rAgamAlika slOkam were good.

Sri Krishna's voice has the capabilities of exactly singing most subtle gamakkams and the depth it has in mandara sthAyi and thAra sthAyi as well. He fully uses these and sings his concerts, thus making them very enjoyable.

In TNK's words "Shriram Kumar followed Krishna faithfully". I cant say anything more. His AlApanai were very neat and all his replies to the main artist were very good and stood up to the expectations created by the main artists.

Sri Prasad on the mrudangam played with a lot of anticipation. His accompanying for the kritis, for each sangati, for the svarams were all very good. His tani had quite differently structured and was enjoyable.

As entered the hall's balcony to find some space to sit and found some familiar faces too, Sri T M Krishna was singing "somasakham natasukasanakam", the anupallavi of the kannaDa kriti. What followed were some brisk TMK-style-long-flowing swaras which was well received.

The danyAsi AlApanai had a few nice phrases and was monotonous in some parts as well. The kriti was kinda repetitive.

The kAmbhOji AlApanai was nothing different from the former one, in terms of the format. It was again good in parts and monotonous otherwise, which quite a few cheap brigas thrown in hither and thither. I left the hall while he started the kriti.

It was another of those concerts which would make a typical mylpore mama and mami give a huge applause.

Personally i would say it was a rather unfortunate day that all the artists on stage were on their off season.

maNirangu short sketch

The concert started with a nice rendition of the tEvAram and the varALi short sketch which followed was real good. The kriti was rendered with good bhavam and with neraval and svarams at 'shyAmE sankarI digvijaya pratApini' were rendered with his usual vigour.

The aTANA AlApanai was done very beautifully showing all the aesthetic beauty of the ragam. The kriti was rendered with svarams in viLamba kAlam. The flavour of aTANA in slow tempo was very good and enjoyable. The sALagabhairavi svarams in high speed were good also.

The main tODi AlApanai was pretty elaborate and the kriti was followed with beautiful neraval in three kAlams and svarams. The jAvaLi which followed was nice. The mukhAri padam was just brilliant and so was the rAga mAlikA viruttam. The tiruppugazh was good also.

Sri Krishna gave a good concert with his usual vigour and it was enjoyable over all from the tEvaram to the maNirangu. Sri Ravi on the violin was overall good in lending support, though at parts there were some lapses. Sri Manoj Siva did a good job both in accompanying the artists and during the tani. He was well assisted by Sri Amrit.

bhujaga sAyinO - yadukula kAmbhOji mangalam - ST

The concert started with a nice rendition of the tODi varNam. The suruTTi AlApanai was very nice and it was an obvious choice to have angArakam after that AlApanai. The neraval and svarams at 'dIna rakshakam pUjita vaidhyanAta kshEtram' were good.

After a brisk 'OrajUpu', Sri Krishna set in for a sedate and un hurried AlApanai of pUrvikalyANi. The AlApanai was very nice and 'ninnuvinA' which followed was rendered with a lot of bhavam and the svarams which followed were well structured with a nice korappu.

'ambA paradEvatE' was very refreshing and gave a good mood for the appreciation of the main kAmbhOji AlApanai. The AlApanai was nicely developed highlighting essential sancarams. The kriti was rendered well and neraval and svarams at 'bhUlOka vaikuntam idiyani' were good.

'navasiddhi peRRAlum' was rendered in a slow tempo followed by the two jAvaLis rendered nicely in quick succession, leading to the tirupugazh and the melodious mangalam.

Sri Varadarajan was good in all parts of the concert. He provided very able accompaniment to the main artist and showed his capabilities during the AlApanais, neraval and svarams also.

Sri Ramabadhran was his usual self, playing for the kriti and following each and every sangati, not to mention his apt playing during the nerval and svarams also. His tani was very enjoyable also.

A Good Concert.

visvEsvara darisan - sindhubhairavi - rUpakam - ST
rAmachandrAya - kuranji - Adi - BR

The concert started with a rendition of the popular dIkshitar kriti in hamsadvani. The short sketch of gamakakriyA was good to hear. The kriti was rendered well. The neraval and svarams were carefully structured to avoid the purvikalyANi phrase 'p d p s'. It was gamakakriyA to the fullest.

The kharaharapriyA AlApanai which followed was just a long elaboration with the kriti to follow. The Krishna-trademark-fire work svarams which followed generated applause from the larger part of the audience. The gurjari kriti was rendered well also.

The AlApanai in shaNkarAbaraNam was drowsy and was more indicative of a kriti than a pallavi. Even the early part of the tAnam was not so well built to suite a pallavi. It only after a couple minutes into the tAnam one could develop the idea that it is going to be pallavi. The AlApanai and the tAnam went on for about 40 minutes. Before starting the pallavi, Krishna requested people to not leave in between. He asked them to leave right away if they were getting delayed or leave after the tani. The pallavi was set in Adi (2 kaLai) with 4 akshara eDuppu.

The pallavi was rendered well with change in naDai to tisram. The rAgamAlika svarams were in vilamba kalam and did not spam longer than one Avartanam for each ragam. The dhurita kAla koraippu was in shankarAbaraNam.

The AbhOgi kriti was rendered at a very slow pace with a lot of bhavam. The slokam and sindhubhairavi kriti were nice also. While the kEdAragauLa and kEdAram parts were very good and enjoyable, it was rather disheartening to see the sindhubhairavi being applauded more than the others. The kuranji mangalam was a welcome change from the regular saurAshtram.

The Violinst was good all thro' the concert in rendering good support and also sticking to the main artist. His individual essays during the AlApanai and neraval and svaram for all the pieces were good. The mrudangist played a good role to boost the concert. His intricate patterns were not so easily taken by not so educated audience, but was enjoyable.

The Hall though provided a good ambience for a concert, left a lot more to be desired in terms of sound settings and acoustics.

mangalam kOsalEndrAya - maNirangu

The concert started about half an hour late, thanks to the pseudo voiced girl who was singing earlier and the west mambalam traffic and the unseasonal rains which had the artists arrive a bit late.

Amidst the traffic on Arya Gowda Raod, Srimushnam Raja Rao's beating the mrudangam and also thanks to the sound system guy, not to talk of Acoustics at Ayodhya Mandapam, one could bearly hear Krishna thro' the concert, lets not ask much for the violin.

The concert started with a brisk rendition of the popular navarAgamAlikA varNam followed by a short and crisp sketch of nAyaki showing just the essentialities of the ragam. The kriti and the swaram which followed were good.

The first elaborate AlApanai was mAyAmALavagauLa. It was a very detailed elaboration, showing the beauty and grandeur of the ragam, which unfortunately is not all that often sung. The mEru samAnA kriti, was rendered with a lot of bhavam. The neraval and svarams at 'gaLamuna shObhillu kanaka bhUSaNamula' in both viLamba and dhurita kAlams which followed were that one could never forget. It was just amazing.

mariverE was well rendered as usual of krishna. anupama guNambuthi came in as a chit was passed requesting the same. It was nice to note that Krishna carefully avoided the popular svara prastharams for aTANA.

The main AlApanai of the concert a very enjoyable, elaborate and unhurriedly rendered kEdAragauLa. The AlApanai almost left nothing much of the rAgam spanning thro' three octaves. The kriti was rendered very well with sparkling cittai svarams and kalpanai svarams at 'shata druthi poojitha'.

The post tani part had a jOnpuri kriti and a nice mAND dEvarnama. The end was a moving rendition of mAmava paTTAbirAma and mangalam in maNirangu.

Shriram Kumar was his usual best following Krishna like a shadow in all parts of the concert. Every AlApanai of Krishna almost seeemed to be exhaustive and left one wondered what could the violinst play. Then came Shriram Kumar's reply which will only show the beauty of the ragam with sancharams that Krishna did not sing. His AlApanais, neraval and svara passages were very good for all kritis.

Srimushnam Raja Rao on the mrudangam was on aggressive mood all the concert. He played in mel kAlam almost all thro' the concert, even for vilamba kAla kritis. His playing thro' the concert accompanying the kritis left much to be desired, as it would have been more enjoyable if he had played according to the pace of the kriti in some instances. The tani was good and enjoyable, though loud. The alternating keezh kAla - mel kAla korappu they adopted was good.

Vaikkom Gopalakrishnan provided good assistance to Raja Rao in the percussion department giving fittig replies and keeping upto him all thro' the concert. On the whole, the two tALa vadhyams were tooo loud to comfort, the sound system guy had kept both their microphones in full volume, while the vocalist and the violinst had only half of that.

What was nice to note was the ambulance which passed thro' during the tani sirened in Adi tALam beat. The bus horn which went on the sudhdha madhyam during the kEdAragauLa AlApanai in unison with krishna. And another bus horn which was at the thAra shadjam, during the jOnpuri kriti.

Every music critic has his/her favourites; they would rave about them even on an off-colour day and denounce those on their hit-list even when they perform well! One has been witnessing this trend over decades of music criticism in the press. This critic, could, perhaps, be accused of backing the singer in question with a euology that he surpasses past masters in certain aspects such as a composite accomplishment of sAhitya suddham, sowkhyam and bhAvam. This concert started with a slow rendition of brihaspatE and nice svarams. The short pUrvikalyANi AlApanai was a fitting prelude to the fast paced kriti which he sung with good neraval and svarams. The exhaustive AlApanai of yadhukula kAmbhOji was well structured to show all the lakshnams of the ragam leaving nothing more. guruvAyoor Dorai's support on the mridangam for this kriti was arresting and eloquent. (One sorely missed these qualities at a couple of later programmes -- neyvEli nArAyaNan at nAdOpAsanA murdered the bhairavi swara jathi while rAjA rAo went 'bang bang' all through his concert at ayOdhyA maNDapam playing mElkAlam for all his slow numbers, with peak irritation in 'marivErE gati' (Anandbhairavi).) The kriti was followed by the fast naLinakAnti kriti.

When varALi AlApanai was started, it was more indicative of a very elaborate kriti, and it showed the gloring majesty of the rAgam. Krishna kept up his latest surprise package of airing a classic varNam in chatusra jAti aTa tALam. The grand varNam was well rendered and was a treat to hear. The svarams at the carNam in both kAlams were very beautiful. A few moments of whispering conversations between him and dorai led to another
exhilarating session of a taniyAvartanam in this twelve-beat cycle.

The Ragam Tanam Pallavi in surutti started off with an exquisite rendition of suraTi, followed by a brisk tanam to which the violinist responded well. The pallavi was beautifully crafted and portrayed the ingenuity of the vocalist. The swarams were the highlight of the piece where in the vocalist chose from a wide range of ragas leaving very little for the violinist, who brilliantly chose to play different rAgAs during the ragamalika, and did a good job at that. In all, it was a lovely piece where in the violinist too had some quality music from his end.

The tukkadas included a beautifully rendered javali in paras, with the special prati madhyamam to give great effect, a trade mark piece of the danam school. The fillers in kapi and sindhubhairavi were well rendered and the concert, dominated mostly by sampradaya sangitam, concluded by the mangalam in saurashtra.

Sri Sriram, spontaneous in his appreciation of the main artist, seemed a bit overwhelmed by krishna. However, considering his sruti suddham and tonal purity, it will be great if he joins in with a few long bow kArvais in bass and frees himself a bit during the AlApanAs. Sri Dorai nearly stole the show; "This is the quality of mridangam support you must get in every concert" he seemed to say! Sri Gopalakrishnan gave good support and coped well in the tani as well as in the pallavi.
