This was the fourth pair of concerts in the Parampara Series that is being organised. Smt Rama Ravi gave a very classical concert with music that touched the heart and soul of all those present.

The recital began with a neat rendition of the varNam and the nAyaki kriti. The quick sindurAmakriyA kriti had a nice round of svarams to follow. The tODi AlApanai was done elaborately. Smt Rama announced that, she is presenting a piece, she learnt from her mother, Smt Tulasi Subramanian, whose rendition of 'gajavadanA' was revered by the stalwarts of yesteryears. The kriti was rendered very nicely with all its grandeur and the amazing cittai svaram was rendered. An elaborate round of well structured one Avarthana svarams followed. The rare kannADa piece was nice as well.

The pUrvikalyANi piece was rendered well with neraval at 'kOTi manmada rUpuDE'. 'saundara rAjam' was rendered in a moving fashion. The way each line was sung with bhavam and the intricate gamakams. The gauLipantu piece was nice also.

The main kEdAragauLa AlApanai was quite crispy and yet elaborate. The kriti was rendered with all the sangatis and an elaborte round of svarams. The bEgaDa kriti was nice. The danyAsi and varALi padams showed the high quality music and all the intricate gamakkams incorporated in to simple looking sangatis were rendered very nicely. The jAvaLi and the mOhanam pieces were good also.

Smt Rama Ravi gave a concert that moved every soul that was present. When one closed one's eyes, some of the places made one wonder if Brindamma was singing there.

Smt Nandita provided able support to her mother covering much of the tAra sthAyi parts and also singing in the higher octave, for some otherwise lower octave lines, thus adding a different flavour to the concert.

Smt Usha Rajagopalan was good in all parts of the concert. Her AlApanais, svarams were all good. Her accompanying of kritis also deserves a mention her.

Sri Kumar on the mridangam was his usual self, making the concert a lot more enjoyable with his accompaniment, fitting to the kritis and sangatis. His tani was nice also.

The concert began with a short sketch of kAmavardini and the varNam was rendered in three speeds. The janaranjani AlApanai was short and the kriti was well rendered with a round of svarams. The kriti of the day in nATTaikuranji was to follow.

The AlApanai of srI rAgam was good. The kriti was rendered in a slow tempo with elaborate svarams at 'bhAvanA bEda caturE'. The varALi kriti was rendered beautifully with an elaborate round of svarams with some kaNakku as well, at the pallavi line.

The main AlApanai of shankarAbaraNam was done quite elaborately with some nice patterns. The kriti was rendered well with elaborate neraval and svarams at the pallavi line. The AlApanai of shanmukhapriyA was done in a phased manner, and was free flowing and full of nice phrases. The tAnam was nice as well. The pallavi was rendered nicely, with some nice neraval and svarams, involving kaNakku. There was changes of naDai and anulOmam and pratilOmam as well. The rAgamAlikA section was nice also.

The kAmbhOji padam was rendered in a bhava laden fashion, reminding one of TNS' rendition. The viruttam and kriti in sindhubhairavi and tiruppugazh were good also. The tALam of the tiruppugazh was a kaNDa lagu in 2 kaLai and then in 1 kaLai and a kaNDa cApu, thus making it a progression from kIzh tALam to mEl tALam.

Sri Sundar gave a nice concert with some good classical music that dint have any frills. It was quite bhava laden and also involved quite a bit of kaNakku vyavahAram. His music is quite refreshing.

Smt. Vijayalakshmi on the violin was real good. Her AlApanais of janaranjani and srI rAgam brought out different flavours of the rAgams. Her svarams matched up to that of the main artist for all the pieces. Her shankarAbaraNam and shanmukhapriyA were both very nice. Her playing for the pallavi was good also.

Sri Balaji played mrudangam with good sense of anticipation all thro' the concert. He played according to the flow of the kriti and matched to the sangatis also. He was ably supported by Sri Purushottaman. Their tani was nice and had a different sounding mOhra to end it.

A slOkam on gaNeshA in hamsadvani gave a good start to the concert. While one was expecting one of the many kritis on Lord Ganesha, there came a change to tODi and the rare varNam was presented. The varNam was nice and the cittai svarams had some nice prayOgams. The srI ranjani kriti was presented nicely with a quick round of svarams.

The first AlApanai of the day, was a beautiful sAmA. The rAga flavour was brought out completely. The shAntam in the rAga AlApanai was more aptly felt with the kriti which followed. The kalyANi AlApanai was kept short and sweet. The kriti was rendered with elaborate neraval and svarams at 'vEda purANAgama shAstrAdulu gumigUDi'. The next was the rare dikshitar kriti rendered with a lot of bhavam and the svarams in the line 'parama suddha mukhAri rAga' and the korappu done to the dhaivatam at were both amazing.

The main nATTaikuranji AlApanai was quite elaborate. The rare kriti was rendered beautifully and followed up with a round of svaram at the pallavi line. The kriti in mOhanam set to lakshmIsa tALam was sung after the tani. The AlApanai of bhairavi was done in the most classical and moving fashion. The tanam was real nice. The pallavi was sung beautifully with trikAlam, anulOma, pratilOma. The yadukulakAmbhOji kriti was reminding the 'pAhi rAmachandra rAghava' of musiri. The thiruppugazh was rendered with two tALams in both hands.

Smt Suguna Purushottaman gave a very fulfilling concert to the small audience. It was carnatic music of the highest order from the word go and there was no dilution or compromise anywhere. Musicians enjoy themselves singing and sing for the sake of the music and not for anything else, will always be giving us high quality music. This concert was another example for the same.

Dr. Hemalatha on the violin did a good job on the whole. Her AlApanais of sAmA and kalyANi were both good. Her neraval and svarams for kalyANi were nice as well. She did a good job in giving her replies to the svarams in suddha mukhAri as well. The main AlApanai of nATTaikuranji and also, for bhairavi were both worth mentioning. She also played some nice neraval for the pallavi and matched up during the svarams.

Sri Kumar on the mrudangam was very accomodative. His accompaniment to each kriti and each sangati was very much in tune with the music. His matching up for the kritis and playing according to the flow of the kriti needs a special mention. His tani was nice and he played some nice patterns. His playing for the kriti in the rare lakshmIsa tALam and also for the pallavi were both nice also.

The concert began with a short sketch of nATTaikuranji and the varNam was rendered nicely. The gauLa kriti had a round of svarams at 'prakAshakarO'. The caturdasa rAgamAlikA was rendered amazingly, reminding one of MLV. The kannaDa kriti which followed was quick and built the tempo of the concert.

The main AlApanai of suddha sAvEri was done in an amazing fashion. The kriti was rendered with all the sangatis and kalpanai svarams at the caraNam were real nice. The madhyamarAvaLi AlApanai and kriti were both rendered well.

The starting of rEvati was quite surprising and made one expect something different. The shifting of rAgam from rEvati to chandrakauns in the middle of the AlApanai was still more interesting. All thro' the AlApanai Vidushi Kanyakumari played rEvati and finishing in a phrase from chandrakauns, while Sri Sanjeev picked up from there and played chandrakauns to finish with a phrase in rEvati. And this exchange led to a nice tAnam which was also played similarly. The pallavi set to rEvati in the pUrvAngam and chandrakauns in the uttarAngam was played nicely with kalpanai svarams also coming in a similar fashion, with both rAgams alternating and ending with a 6 Avarththana kOrvai featuring both the rAgams.

Vidushi Kanyakumari gave a nice concert featuring some rare pieces and also doing a great job with them. Sri Sanjeev played well. His svarams were nice. His AlApanai and tAnam during the pallavi were also nice. Sri Prasad gave amazing support to each piece. His playing during the rAgamAlikA and also during the main kriti and for the pallavi were real nice. Sri Gopalakrishnan also supported the percussion department with his able support. The tani they shared was nice and the last mOhra of the tani was also structured similar to the kOrvai played during the pallavi.

The concert started with a short sketch of sArangA and the varNam to follow. The kAnaDA kriti was nice. The yadukula kAmbhOji AlApanai by Sri Taranathan was very elaborate and he sang some very nice phrases. The kriti was rendered with a lot of bhavam and a round of kalpanai svarams.

The mukhAri AlApanai of Sri Thyagarajan was good. The kriti was rendered beautifully, with nice neraval and svarams in the anupallavi line. The kalAvati kriti was rendered with a ultra short round of svarams. vAcaspati was elaborated till the tAra shadjam by Sri Taranathan and there after by Sri Thyagarajan. The shared a nice AlApanai and a short tAnam. The pallavi was simple, yet executed very well with anulOmam, pratilOmam, tisram etc. The rAgamAlikA svarams were nice. The post tani pieces were all good.

The violinst was good in all parts. His AlApanais, though measured, were good. The mridangist of the day was amazing. His playing for the viLamba kAla pieces was so perfect. His patterns for the mEl kAlam and also, during the pallavi were good. He was well supported by the Ghatam. They kept the tani to be ultra short.

The concert began with a short sketch of asAvEri with the not-so-often heard varnam to follow and a short round of kalpanai svarams. The AlApanai of nATTai was nice. The kriti was rendered with a round of neraval and svarams at 'bhAnu kOTi samkAsham pApaharam paramEsham'. The short sketch of Anandabhairavi and the kriti were moving.

The pUrvikalyANi AlApanai was elaborate. The kriti was rendered with neraval and svarams at 'vAraNa paravrdha tApa shamanacana vAsava mukha sura sEvita padayuga'. The short sketch of ravichandrikA was quite inspring. The kriti was rendered with some quick neraval at 'jata gUrci nATaka sUtramunu'.

The aTANA AlApanai was little aggressive, compared to what the ragam is popularly believed to be. That dint make it non-aTANA-ish or not enjoyable. The rare kriti was rendered very nicely with an elaborate round of svarams. The main sAramati AlApanai was done leisurely. It was done showing many vintage sancarams. The kriti was rendered with a round of svarams in kIzh kAlam alone.

The suruTTi AlApanai and tAnam were quite elaborate and very enjoyable. The pallavi was rendered with rAgamAlikA svarmas in quick succession. The Violinst of the day was in full form. His AlApanais were real nice. His short sketch of ravichandrikA was very inspiring. His aTANA and sAramati AlApanais were both as good as the vocalist's elaboration, if not a shade better. His replies during svarams was also nice. His suruTTi and tAnam were real good. His replies for rAgamAlika, with each ragam for just one Avarththanam were real nice.

The mridangist was in full form. The patterns he played for each kriti and sangati were so matching and gelling to the main stream music. The ghatam vidwan played providing good support to the mridangam. The tani was great as well.

The concert was on the theme, 'the five elements' or the 'pancha bhUta'. The artist hence chose to present the five pancha bhUta kshEtra kritis of Dikshitar at the concert.

The concert began with the mangaLam slOkam, appropriate to the theme of the concert, rendered in mAyAmALavagauLa and kEdAram. The kEdAram kriti was rendered nicely with a elaborate round of neraval and svarams at 'saNgItavAdya vinOdatANDavajAta bahutara bhEdacOdyam'. The fiddle vidwan was following like a shade and gave amazing replies.

The husEni kriti was sung in a very moving fashion and a elaborate round of svarams were sung at the pallavi line. The svara prastaram was very inspiring. The sArangA AlApanai was done in a fashion fitting the dIkshitar kriti, incorporating special prayOgam used by dIkshitar with the kriti to follow. The violinst was good in playing for the song. The percussion dept also made the kriti more enjoyable.

While i was expecting a bhairavi main, i was rather surprised to hear an AlApanai which was barely 5 minutes. The shorter 4 min reply from violinist, made one wonder what was in store. The kriti was rendered in a rather slow tempo, compared to the popular version in vogue. The round of svarams at 'maNgaLakara mandahAsa vadanam' was short and sweet.

Then came the amazing AlApanai of shankarAbaraNam. It was really fantastic AlApanai. It had quite a few SSI-benchmarked-phrases incorporated into it. The violinst also made a nice portrayal of the rAgam. The tAnam was amazing also with both the vocalist and violinst making some good exchanges. The pallavi was rendered in a grand manner and was aptly set in accordance to the theme of the day. It was rendered quite elaborately with anulOma pratilOma and the rAgamAlika svarams. The Mridangam and Ghatam vidwans were visibly quite happy to be playing for such a pallavi, in a not so popular tALam. The tani they shared for about 15 minutes was definetely very different to hear and many students of percussion must have benefitted from the patterns that were played. They played a korappu to the start of the pallavi line and also a 2 Avarthana mOhra at the end of the tani.

The yamunA piece was rendered in a amazing manner with all the grandeur and majesty associated with the piece. The concert ended with a newly composed mangaLam, that was composed for the occasion by the violinist of the day.

A very fullfilling concert to remember for sometime. I only hope they release the audio and video of the concert, in CDs or something. It would be a collector's item to store.

Smt Sudharani, as usual, was very refreshing in all her alapanais and the pallavi, well, i dint expect something simpler from her.

Smt Sudharani began the concert with a rendition of the sArangA varNam in a different fashion. she showed the three speeds in each avarthanam, by increasing the speed after each anga of the tALam. The AlApanais of AndhOLikA, tODi and kalyANi were all having nice refreshing phrases. The neraval was done as 'tambura jEkoni guNamula jeluvonda bADacu' for the tODi piece. The svarams and korappu in multiple naDais, which she is usually very conversant with, were all done very well. There was graha bedam from kalyANi to mOhanam in both the AlApanai and tAnam. She did seem to have some problems with throat at the higher octave, but that dint stop anything in her music.

a concert to remember for a long time.
