It was a great concert. Two musicians of himalayan stature coming together meant it was a jackpot and had nothing short of a great concert. The kritis were all rendered very movingly. The AlApanai of rItigaula by Smt. Varadachari was very elaborate and fitting to the kriti. The AlApanai of shankarAbaraNam by Smt. Purushottaman was majestic. The neraval and svarams were all shared by both the vocalists and rendered in a very classical fashion. The accompanists were good and played well for the occasion.

For such a combo, one expected a longer concert and was thoroughly dissappointed with a quick less-than-two-hours affair. One was left wanting more of the great music from the two stalwarts.

It was a great concert. All the pieces carefully chosen and presented with a lot of bhavam. Being a thematic concert, there were a few interludes explaining some of the facets and interesting points about the compositions that were presented. Also, there was more emphasis on the compositions and not on the manOdarmam as the occasion demanded. The kritis were all rendered very well. The AlApanai of pUrvikalyANi was short while that of kAmbhOji was very beautiful. The neraval svarams in both were presented crisply. The rAgamAlikA viruTTam was also very beautifully rendered.

The choice and presentation of each rAgam was excellent and the way in which each rAgam was handled was just tooo good. The pieces were all effortlessly rendered. The kalpitam and manOdarmam were both very inspiring and creative and yet vintage stuff. The accompanist were very good and did a fantastic job in accompanying aptly.

They all spoke about the various facets of Smt Mani Krishnaswamy. As Dr VV Srivatsa was ill, Sri B M Sundaram also moderated the discussions. Sri Srinivasan of NadopAsana also spoke on the occasion and Sri M K Sudarashan proposed the vote of thanks. Smt Suguna Purushottaman and Smt Suguna Varadachari also presented a composition on Smt Mani Krishnaswamy set to mOhana kalyANi and Adi tALam composed by Smt Suguna Purushottaman.

The concert which followed had only kritis being sung with no manOdarmam at all. Smt Suguna Purushottaman announced that this will not be a regular concert and they would present pieces that were Smt. Mani Krishnaswamy's favourites and those they learnt together. The kritis were rendered in such a grand fashion that one did not feel the absence of any manOdarmam. The accompanists were good.

It was a truly amazing concert to listen. The cintAmaNi, bhairavi and shankarAbaraNam pieces were rendered with all their caraNams. It was fun to listen to usually main-ed kritis as fillers and as a mangaLam. One couldnt also find a concert with so many sets of allied ragams handled in the same programme.

The bEgaDa varNam was rendered in a brilliant kAla pramANam making an awesome start to the concert.. The cintAmaNi was excellent. AlApanai of lalita and svaras to the sAhityam 'lalitA' for the kriti were all superb. The bhairavi piece stood out and made a lasting impact and listening to all the caraNams fully was a treat compared to the jumble that is usually rendered. The kalyANi piece, a rare number, was rendered well with neraval and svarams at 'mInalOcani karuNajUDavammA'. The Anandabhairavi AlApanai was quite elaborate and indicative of a main piece. However, it turned out to be otherwise. The main sAvEri was rendered very well with neraval and svarams at 'nArAyaNi shyAmakrishNanuta...' For all the pieces, svarams were rendered to various points of sAhityam (and hence eDuppu) in the line in which svarams were sung. It was all perfect and one dint feel like hearing allied ragams till one got to writing down the list and a writeup.

The violinist was her good old usual self following the main artist. The mridangist played with good anticipation, his tani culminating to 'shyAmakrishNanutE', (which was where the kOrvai of the final vocalist ended) was crisp and good.

Smt Suguna Purushottaman is one of the few musicians of the old guard who still continue to entertain us with classical music of the highest order. All AlApanais were sheer display of her display. The neraval and svarams were all well structured and were enjoyable. She started her concert with a invocatory slOkam. The rare kEdAragauLa varNam was presented beautifully. The bahudAri piece had an interesting round of svarams at 'srI vAsudEva' and 'brOvabAramA' successively.

The simmEndramadyamam AlApanai was short and sweet. The kriti was rendered with an elaborate round of svarams at line begining 'nIlAmbikA' in the anupallavi. The detailed dEvagAndhAri AlApanai was done in a very un hurried fashion. The kriti was rendered in a moving fashion with all its three caraNams and an elaborate round of svarams at the pallavi line. The vasanta kriti was nicely rendered with the required stresses on the svarAksharams in its chittai svarams.

The main tODi AlApanai was rendered very elaborately, including all the enjoyable phrases adding to its beauty. The kriti was rendered amazingly with neraval and svarams at 'sthambamu lOpala nuNDaga lEdA'. The nIlAmbari AlApanai was good. The kEdAragauLa kriti was rendered in an unhurried fashion. The kuranji piece was rendered beautifully. Smt Suguna Purushottaman announced that she rendered the brindavana sAranga piece, in memory of Sri Yagnaraman. The piece described the past memories of the person and also created a sober mood. All the other tukkadas were well rendered also.

Smt Poorna Vaidhyanathan on the violin was good in parts. The sound system had the violin playing a little loud. Sri Vaidhyanathan played well for the full concert. His tani was nice as well.

A slOkam on gaNeshA in hamsadvani gave a good start to the concert. While one was expecting one of the many kritis on Lord Ganesha, there came a change to tODi and the rare varNam was presented. The varNam was nice and the cittai svarams had some nice prayOgams. The srI ranjani kriti was presented nicely with a quick round of svarams.

The first AlApanai of the day, was a beautiful sAmA. The rAga flavour was brought out completely. The shAntam in the rAga AlApanai was more aptly felt with the kriti which followed. The kalyANi AlApanai was kept short and sweet. The kriti was rendered with elaborate neraval and svarams at 'vEda purANAgama shAstrAdulu gumigUDi'. The next was the rare dikshitar kriti rendered with a lot of bhavam and the svarams in the line 'parama suddha mukhAri rAga' and the korappu done to the dhaivatam at were both amazing.

The main nATTaikuranji AlApanai was quite elaborate. The rare kriti was rendered beautifully and followed up with a round of svaram at the pallavi line. The kriti in mOhanam set to lakshmIsa tALam was sung after the tani. The AlApanai of bhairavi was done in the most classical and moving fashion. The tanam was real nice. The pallavi was sung beautifully with trikAlam, anulOma, pratilOma. The yadukulakAmbhOji kriti was reminding the 'pAhi rAmachandra rAghava' of musiri. The thiruppugazh was rendered with two tALams in both hands.

Smt Suguna Purushottaman gave a very fulfilling concert to the small audience. It was carnatic music of the highest order from the word go and there was no dilution or compromise anywhere. Musicians enjoy themselves singing and sing for the sake of the music and not for anything else, will always be giving us high quality music. This concert was another example for the same.

Dr. Hemalatha on the violin did a good job on the whole. Her AlApanais of sAmA and kalyANi were both good. Her neraval and svarams for kalyANi were nice as well. She did a good job in giving her replies to the svarams in suddha mukhAri as well. The main AlApanai of nATTaikuranji and also, for bhairavi were both worth mentioning. She also played some nice neraval for the pallavi and matched up during the svarams.

Sri Kumar on the mrudangam was very accomodative. His accompaniment to each kriti and each sangati was very much in tune with the music. His matching up for the kritis and playing according to the flow of the kriti needs a special mention. His tani was nice and he played some nice patterns. His playing for the kriti in the rare lakshmIsa tALam and also for the pallavi were both nice also.

I reached while they were singing danyAsi kriti. The neraval and swarams were handled very well. bEgaDa was elaborated very well with all the essentialites of the ragam displayed. The kriti was rendered beautifully with svarams at the pallavi line. The sAvEri kriti was rendered with a lot of bhavam.

The main course of the concert, shanmukhapriyA was elaborated very well by both the vocalists, Smt Varadachari started and elaborated over the madhyasthayI while Smt Purushottaman elaborated the tArasthayI and finished the AlApanai. They both sang a short, yet beautiful tAnam. The pallavi was set to an off beat tALam and the veterans sang the pallavi with utmost perfection bringing the rAgam bhavam in each sangati. The mandatory anulOmam pratilOmam were present, followed by svarams.

The violinst was good in accompanying the vocalists. She did a good job in all parts and especially during the pallavi she was also accurate in adhering to tALam without loosing the sAhitya bhAvam.

The mridangist gave good support and was ably supported by the ghatam artists. They played a nice tani as well.

The concert started with a very bright note in the weighty rendition of the pada varNam. Who at all sings varNams which are longer than most kritis with 4 caraNam and cittai svara sAhityams for each of them.It was a very refreshing start to the concert and made many a rasika sit up.

The AbhOgi kriti was rendered with nicely structured svarams. The short AlApanai of Anandhabhairavi by Smt Varadachari was very good and displayed the full rAga bhavam. The kriti was rendered in a rather leisurely manner in a much slower tempo than what one gets to hear in concerts. The svarams at 'kanna talli' were good. The bEgaDa kriti was just put in to give a change of moods, getting one ready for what was to come.

Smt Varadachari extensively elaborated rAmapriya in madhayama sthayI while Smt Purushottam did a equally good job with the tAra sthAyi and mEl kalam before leaving it to Smt Varadachari to finish up the AlApanai with the mandhara sthAyI explorations. The kriti in vilamba kAlam was good and showed all the essentialities of the rAgam. It was rendered very well with neraval and svarams at 'rAghavA ravi kula AdavA yena thudhi'.

srI visvanAtam was rendered in a slower-than-normal kalapramANam and exactly displaying the rAga transitions. It was very good.

The main AlApanai in tODi was well structured. Similar to the rAmapriyA, Smt Varadachari sang the AlApanai in the madhayama sthAyI while Smt Purushottaman took off from the tArasthAyI shadjam to wrap up. The rare kriti was rendered well with neraval and svarams at "sthambamu lOpala nuNDaga lEdA". The kAvaDi chindu was good also.

It was nice to see two established singers sharing stage and singing as a duo. There was good coordination and understanding and both of them complimented each other in their singing. Though they said, we havent planned or rehersed, but just spoke over once as to what to sing, the concert was so good and was better coordinated that most other duo concerts.

The violinst was very good. She did a good job in all parts. Her accompanying was good and so was her solo parts.

The mrudangist was good in lending good laya support. He was sensible in playing according to the kriti. The tani was good also.

Overall, a different kind of experience, of course on the positive side.

short tani
govinda harE - rAgamAlikA (kApi, bAgEsrI, bEhAg, sindhubhairavi, dEsh, sivaranjani, tilang) - Adi (own composition)

The tisra rendition of the tODi varNan was very good. The saurAshtram AlApanai, though a bit short was something which one has to preserve in memories. Hearing saurAshtram other than pavamAna is a treat and with AlApanai, it was something really vintage. The neraval and svara prastharams of pUrvikalyANi were good. 'brovavamma' was rendered with a lot of bhavam.

the kAmbhOji AlApanai was true to the veteran's class. The sancArams were quite intersting ones. The pallavi and anupallavi were rendered very nicely. After the anupallavi, she sang the pallavi line first in vilamba kAlam and then in tisra naDai and then in dhurita kAlam and then went on to render the caraNam in dhurita kAlam. After that, she came back to the vilamba kAla rendition of the neraval line. The neraval was good and the svarams had a lot of kaNakku and korappu. During the beautiful tani she suddenly shifted from tisra Ekam (2 kaLai) to rUpakam (2 kaLai)

The naTabhairavi and sAvEri pieces were just rushed thro' to reach the pallavi. The elaborations of dharmavati were good. the tAnam was very short. The pallavi was rendered with the usual change of kAlams and all that and the svarams were also nice with involved kaNakku. The kOrvai which she used to finish the svaram was good. The last rAgamAlikA, a composition of Smt. Suguna was a nice ending.

Smt. Suguna was caught in the constraint of time from the end of anupallavi of "shrI subramaNyAya namastE". The tani was not fully finished. the korappu was done together. The tAnam was very short. Sri. Chandramouli on the violin was good at his saurAshtram AlApanai. He did a good job with kAmbhOji as well. His expansion of dharmavati was tending to the main artist's presentation. He just played one strech of tAnam. During the pallavi and svarams, he was missing it a few times. The percussionists were good all thro' the concert and both the tanis, the second being just 6-7 Avartams long.
