A wonderful concert. It started with a brief welcome talk and an introduction. The concert started with a rare varNam. Smt. Rama mentioned that Sri Ramachandran was a great vidwan with a huge repertoire and was known for his offbeat selections to teach and perform. She mentioned that she would present such compositions in this concert.
As she mentioned, except for the main kriti, all other pieces were rare and unheard off, to this writer. Some of which were not easy to find on google either. Still, each piece was rendered with a traditional gait and grandeur. The manodarma aspects were handled even better. One is short of words to express the feeling for each of the pieces. Should it be called satisfaction or the contending of the mind or soul! Was it the music! Was it the rendition! Whatever it be, one had to be there to listen and understand the feeling this concert created. It was an awesome concert and one to remember for a long time.

A tribute that couldn’t get any better
Sangeetham is an experience. Music is only a part of this.
Though the chaste music and its rendering are of utmost importance and an
integral part of the exercise to achieve this experience, it is still
incomplete without finesse. It is important that the artists communicate with
each other and with the audience who come to seek an experience. The artists’
diction and conviction will drive this experience to its best. What is
mentioned below is a poor man’s account of one such experience.
Smt. Rama Ravi remembered one of her gurus Sangeetha
Kalanidhi Smt. D K Pattammal, under the auspices of Nada Inbam on 28th
Oct 2018. Smt. Rama began with a few words about her relationship with Smt.
Pattammal and mentioned that she was presenting pieces which have a strong
connection with her.
The ever auspicious srI rAgam, wherever included in a
concert, usually increases the pep. When sang at the start of a concert, it
means a lot. A brisk varNam in srI ragam was at its best. Invoking Ganesha’s
blessings and asking him to come along as a companion, the hamsadwani number
was presented neatly with a sparkling cittai svaram. This writer has always
found the Pattammal – asAvEri combination very interesting. Smt. Pattammal’s
handling of uruppaDis in this rAgam is usually wonderful. Smt. Rama presented
mApAla velasi in a very apt pace and rounded with a round of svarams. The
patterns and twists and turns presented were just too good.
Smt. Rama recollected learning the nAtakuranji number
ekkalattilum maravEnE, when Sri. T Sankaran gave it to Smt. Pattammal at Tamil
Isai Sangam. Smt. Rama also remembered how Smt. Pattammal insisted on singing
every sangati twice correctly and mentioned that Smt. Pattammal strongly
believed that the practice of sangatis is what leads to perfection, which
cannot come from any books or notes. The short AlApanai was only a trailer. The
kriti was rendered in a sedate pace. Next up was an elaborate danyAsi, woven
phrase-after-phrase showing the nuances and intricases of the rAgam and the
kriti was rendered beautifully. There were swarams in both speeds leading up to
the anupallavi line ‘gAna vinodini’.
A racy pantuvarALi was next. It was developed and presented
in a very neat manner. The kriti was rendered with neraval and svarams at the
line ‘lakshmi dEvi valachuna’. It was an elaborate affair showing the details
of the rAgam and the composition. A rare bilahari number was rendered next.
It’s a song this writer had not even heard off earlier.
A meditative saundararAjam was next. The monagal of
brudAvana sArangA just before Smt. Rama started the song was making the
audience yearn for more. The main course of the evening was bhairavi. A
favorite of this writer. It was just too good and touched many deep feelings on
its way. The kriti was rendered with a round of svarams.
Smt. Rama’s music is always special. It always has the right
measure of everything. Her presentation of the nuances and the way each gamakka
comes out of her throat is something that leaves one astonishing. What a
perfection! Her choice of pieces and line-up for a concert is always
interesting. She makes it a point to cover as many composers and tALams. She
does take up related rAgams at times, but pulls them off with much ease. It was
very soothing to hear her sing. Smt. Nanditha provided vocal support to her
mother and guru, during the songs. It was as if one person was singing. Such was
the merger. And if someone said harmonies are only possible in Western Music,
listening to a pair of singers from the Brinda school, singing the same line in
different octaves and the practice of alternating the dAtu and mAtu while
singing svara sAhitya parts of kritis, will make them think otherwise. This was
easily felt when Smt. Nanditha moved to a different octave than her mother and
provided much needed support.
Sri R K Shriram Kumar is himself a disciple of Smt. DK
Pattammal and her brother Sri DK Jayaraman. His playing on the occasion was as
appropriate as it could get. His way of accompaniment usually suits any
traditional singer. Hence, it was match made in heaven, for the evening. His
handling of rAgams and svarams and accompanying the kritis made it much more
exciting. Be it single Avartana svarams or the long passages or the korappu
part, it was all done in such a beautiful manner. Sri K Arunprakash was the
perfect match in the percussion department, for this team. His
playing-for-the-kriti approach is always good. He was too good in embellishing
this experience and even the tani Avathanam was in tune with the mood created
by the song taken up as the main item.
The portrait of Smt. Pattammal that was placed was speaking
many things too. Smt. Pattammal clad in a trademark kattam-potta-podavai, a
measured smile. She was looking at the artists on stage and the audience making
sure everything was going on the way she wished.
The concluding part of the concert had a kEdaragauLa jAvaLi
to start with, followed by the ever famous eppo varuvArO. Neelambari added to
the emotive mode. khamAs tillAnA and tiruppugazh lead to the curtains.
Some of the characteristics of Smt. Pattammal’s music are
the bhavam and azhutham in music. The nirnayam in singing and the laya
strongness. All these are naturally present in Smt. Rama’s music. In a positive
linear combination with the gamakka nuances and finesse aspects from the Brinda
school, it is indeed a rather wonderful combination that has happened to music.
It will be difficult to find different adjectives for each
aspect and each kriti of such a concert. It was an experience difficult to
express in words. It was sangeetham at its best. Arguably the best tribute to
Smt. Pattammal, by a disciple of hers.

Season 2012
I had a rather different season this time. Attended far few concerts this season than many previous years. And for some reason, forgot to write down songlists during some concerts and misplaced some of them sheets when I did write down. Originally one wasnt planning to make a post here and hence wasnt really keen on keeping lists, however, felt very bad for not being part of the group here and therefor, have a few full lists here and points/items from my memory for the others.
After Seshampatti Sri Sivalingam's concert at BVB, one took a long hiatus.
Heard Smt. Nanditha Ravi's concert at Ragasudha Hall. A well presented concert representing one of the old traditions of classical music. One then attended concerts of Smt. Suguna Varadachari and Smt. Ritha Rajan at Ragasudha Hall on the 17th and 18th of December 2012. Both were great concerts. As usual with the great vidushis, they were concerts of pure classical music out-and-out. Smt. Suguna's kalyani AlApanai and kAntimatim were both wonderful. The main of the evening, tuLasi bilva with neraval at karuNatO was so moving. Smt. Ritha's renditions of the shankarAbaraNam and bEgaDa padams (mAnamE bhUshaNamu and yAlapadarE) were both stunning and so was the nATTaikuranji jAvaLi (tArumAru). Earlier her suruTTi AlApanai and angArakam in the old-world-version in cauka kAlam were amazing.

Was a classical concert. The grand beginning was so wonderful with srI rAjagOpAla. The gauri manOhari AlApanai was great. The classical AbhEri (that with suddha dhaivatam) was a grand affair with an elaborate AlApanai, neraval and svarams at 'jagamElE paramAtmA'. The kAmbhOji AlApanani was wonderful and the tAnam was very moving. It was a superb pallavi fitting the occasion of 'vaikunTa EkAdasi'
Heard Trichur brothers and Prasanna Venkataraman at Music Academy. Trichur brothers sang dAchukOvalEnA. Prasanna's lalitA was moving. Heard Aishwarya Vidya Raghunath at Kapali Fine Arts. She sang O jagadambA for submain and O rangasAyee for main. It was a well presented concert which ended with Ahiri padam. Sri T N Krishnan's concert at Raga Sudha began with kAmbhOji varnam. The teratIyagarAdhA was great. 'dinamani vamsa' and 'paridAnamicchidE' were played well as well. After listening to Smt. Vedavalli's kAmbhOji, Prasanna's harikAmbhOji and mOhanam and Aishwarya's kEdAragauLa (varNam) and kAmbhOji, TNK's kambhOji, harikAmbhOji and bilahari in quick succession, it was a long string of same and/or related ragams and one just couldnt sit anymore. I m told TNK played mohanam for main.

The kAmbhOji padam was superb and the kuranji padam was just out of the world was a really rare treat. A touching concert.
Thamarakkadu Govindan Namboodri's concert at Raga sudha hall was awesome. His mAkElarA was perfect and superb. The danyAsi Alapanai and mAyuranAtam were both so wondeful. The aTANA AlApanai and srI kumAra nagarAlayE were awesome. The main was mari mari ninnE left one spellbound. Indeed a great concert.
Thanks to bad health, that was the last concert for me this season.
Its my bad that i missed noting down concert lists and don't remember what was sung in many of them. Hope to have a better season next time. Hope floats!

The theme of the programme was 'kAla pramANam'
evvari bOdana - AbhOgi - Adi - PSI
In the mordern concert tradition, it is prefered to start a concert with a varnam and quick song on probably Lord Ganesha, with sometimes a quick round of svarams.
The concept of slow song like 'gajavadaAnA sammodita' in tODi or madhyama sruti kriti like 'hastivadanAya' is not known and will it suit to start a concert that way?
srI mahA gaNapatim - aTANA - Adi - JCW
mApAla velasi - asAvEri - Adi - T
The kAlapramANam is very important for sangeetham and sahitya bhavam. It depends on the melody of the ragam, structure of the composition, lyrics and other factors too. Ragams are classified according to the gamakkams they take as 'sarva svara gamakka ragams', 'ardha kampita ragams', 'kampa heena ragams' and this also decides the kalapramanam.
Ragams like yadukula kambhoji and devagAndhari are preferably taken up in slow pace to give more melody.
lesser number of words and long syllables warrant slow pace, more wordy pieces might sound better in fast pace. sahitya bhavam and the theme of the song should also be considered.
Illustration of sahitya bhavam governing kAlapramANam with 2 kritis in kEdAram
though kEdAram is probably a faster ragam, the theme of the song and the cosmic dance and other descriptions of 'Ananda naTana prakAsam' warrant a slow pace.
The violinst mentioned that it is believed that the antara gAndhAram gives some energy and the suddha gAndhAram is somewhat slow and sober. Hence it was considered more auspicious to start a concert with a ragam that has antara gAndhAram.
Ananda naTana prakAsam - kEdAram - misra cApu - MD (RS)
A vocalist needs a very deep depth of the voice to sustain slower tempo of the song. MDR probably was the best for this.
To show a contrast, a song that calls everybody for have darshan of the Lord Nataraja and is in a peppy mood.
ellOrum vArungaL - kEdAram - Adi - GKB
The mridangist made a mention of the need to need to play sticking to the vocalist and their music. Also, knowledge of the kritis for the percussionist is very important and it is tough to actually get the correct timing of the vocalist. The expression 'kavvi vaasikkaradu' was used.
There was a question about the need for cittai svarams. The vocalist mentioned they are supposed to be decorative and the violinst also added that some musicians like TMT believed that it was an easy tool to teach svara singing to students.
The cittaiswaram of gajavadanA in tODi and the svara sAhityam of srI kAmAkshi in vasanta were both rendered to show this idea.

It was a great concert. Smt. Rama Ravi started off with a few words about Sri Raghava Rao and mentioned she would include a few compositions that were taught to her by Sri Raghava Rao. It was later mentioned during the concert that they were the darbAr, madhyamAvati and latAngi pieces.
The concert was filled with deep classicism from the word go. The kritis renditions were all precisely perfect. The manodarmam was very apt and measured for each kriti. The concert had a wonderful start in the bhairavi varNam. The sAvEri kriti followed up with a quick round of svarams. The harikAmbhOji AlApanai was short and yet very appealing. The kriti rendition was stunning and appropriate svarams followed.
The darbAr, was something i personally enjoyed the best in the kriti. The AlApanai was quite inspiring and the kriti was a rare one, rendered very beautifully. The madhyamAvati and latangi kriti, with neraval and svarams, followed thro'.
The Anandabhairavi kriti with its intricate cittai svaram rendered with various permutations, led to the main piece. bEgaDa was very elaborate and bhava laden. The kriti was rendered with beautiful neraval and svarams.
The saurAshTram padam was very beautiful. The hamsadvani piece was stunning and rendered with a lot of weight. The kEdAragauLa padam was great too. The khamAs and suruTTi javaLis were very nice too.
Smt. Nandita Ravi provided very apt vocal support to her mom-cum-guru. The accompanists were very good and played their parts perfectly. The violinst was very good in both following the main artist and in giving sensible replies. The mridangist played with good anticipation and in tune with what was presented. His tani was good also.

It was a very beautiful concert. The main artist did a great job in choosing all rare compositions and presenting them all very effectively and touching those who attended the concert. The AlApanais of kalyANi and kIravANi were crisp and the svarams were measured. The sAvEri was pretty elaborate with neraval and svarams and it was very good. The kritis were all nicely rendered. Multiple caraNams were rendered for many kritis and one of them even had a nice cittai tooo. The accompanists were all very good and gave perfect support to the concert over all.
Though just an hour and half, it was a very fulfilling concert.
