A leisurely concert. Each piece presented with so much grandeur. Each concert of this vidwan is like a special occasion for music.

The alapanai of ghaNTA was such a experience. Sri Namboodri demonstrated the difference between closely allied ragas of ghaNTA, such as bhairavi, Ananda bhairavi, dhayAsi. It was a striking difference to hear navarasa kannaDa after ghaNTA.

When the first sketch of suddha dhanyAsi came, it was already a hit. The rasika was enough satisfied with just the first line of raga Akshiptika. That is how one can quickly sum up this concert of Thamarakkadu Sri Govindan Namboodri. All that came after was a bonus. So many wonderful compositions, rakti ragams and on and on.

The concert gave the satisfaction of attending many concerts and put in so much of musical thought and knowledge into the listener's mind. It would need a long time to process and re-live the entire concert and rejoice the full concert.

A truly wonderful concert. Each item was just too good. A fantastic concert. Awesomeness.

When a musician lives his music and sings for music's sake, the output is much different and better than when it is presented for someone else. This concert was one of its kind. The choice of pieces and the presentation was not done for the audience or for a concert to be a hit. It appeared that the artist wanted to sing for the music and that brought out a very beautiful approach and a refreshing outlook to how a concert is viewed. The choice of pieces deserve the first mention. A typically-considered-a-tukkada, never-sung-in-concerts, so-called-pappa-pattu, nottu-swara-esque number was taken up as one of first elaborate items. gurumUrtE was rendered in a serene pace with a quick AkshipthikA and an intricate round of svarams. Something that is unheard off. AbhOgi was beautiful and clear from the start. Neatly presented. An elaborately elaborate AlApanai of Ahiri. It was in a relaxed and intricate affair. Popular phrases to identify the rAgam were few and sparsely dispersed. The gait of the rAgam and the grandeur that needs to be associated were present in full, showcasing unknown vast greener pastures that needed to be explored. With such an AlApanai, it had to an epitome of a kriti. The navAvarNam was rendered in a measured viLamba gati. There was no hurry. It was given its due. All of 45 minutes, including the svarams in a matching pace only. This writer was left wondering, "what more to sing!" after finishing this Ahiri. The mUkhAri AlApanai was too good too. It was difficult to concentrate, but Sri Namboodri, wouldn't let you off so easily. He made sure this was even more special. In content, quality, style and presentation. Coming back to the choices, a vAra kriti to end the concert. That was un-heard-off too. 

Sri Varadarajan matched up in all departments. His AlApanais of AbhOgi, Ahiri and mUkhAri demand special mentions. It must have been difficult to give those responses impromptu. He was so well in doing it. Sri Narendran was handling the percussion department aptly. His playing much suited to the style of music presented and the patterns were intricately woven in the music as the numbers were rolling out. He was ably assisted by Sri Sridhar. As the lakshana and lakshya are inculcated together with immense sadhakam, the music that comes out has to be of the highest order. This was evident from the entire team and it was indeed a blessing to have been through this musical experience. One of its kind.

Season 2012

I had a rather different season this time. Attended far few concerts this season than many previous years. And for some reason, forgot to write down songlists during some concerts and misplaced some of them sheets when I did write down. Originally one wasnt planning to make a post here and hence wasnt really keen on keeping lists, however, felt very bad for not being part of the group here and therefor, have a few full lists here and points/items from my memory for the others. 

After Seshampatti Sri Sivalingam's concert at BVB, one took a long hiatus.

Heard Smt. Nanditha Ravi's concert at Ragasudha Hall. A well presented concert representing one of the old traditions of classical music. One then attended concerts of Smt. Suguna Varadachari and Smt. Ritha Rajan at Ragasudha Hall on the 17th and 18th of December 2012. Both were great concerts. As usual with the great vidushis, they were concerts of pure  classical music out-and-out. Smt. Suguna's kalyani AlApanai and kAntimatim were both wonderful. The main of the evening, tuLasi bilva with neraval at karuNatO was so moving. Smt. Ritha's renditions of the shankarAbaraNam and bEgaDa padams (mAnamE bhUshaNamu and yAlapadarE) were both stunning and so was the nATTaikuranji jAvaLi (tArumAru). Earlier her suruTTi AlApanai and angArakam in the old-world-version in cauka kAlam were amazing.

It was a concert of a different kind. A music that touched heart and soul. A stirring hamIrkalyANi, touching mukhAri. An Arabhi that flowed like a pravAham with no frills. indeed a sublime tODi. kAmAkshi kanchadalAyadAkshi neraval left each of the 40-odd people in tears.

Was a classical concert. The grand beginning was so wonderful with srI rAjagOpAla. The gauri manOhari AlApanai was great. The classical AbhEri (that with suddha dhaivatam) was a grand affair with an elaborate AlApanai, neraval and svarams at 'jagamElE paramAtmA'. The kAmbhOji AlApanani was wonderful and the tAnam was very moving. It was a superb pallavi fitting the occasion of 'vaikunTa EkAdasi'



Heard Trichur brothers and Prasanna Venkataraman at Music Academy. Trichur brothers sang dAchukOvalEnA. Prasanna's lalitA was moving. Heard Aishwarya Vidya Raghunath at Kapali Fine Arts. She sang O jagadambA for submain and O rangasAyee for main. It was a well presented concert which ended with Ahiri padam. Sri T N Krishnan's concert at Raga Sudha began with kAmbhOji varnam. The teratIyagarAdhA was great. 'dinamani vamsa' and 'paridAnamicchidE' were played well as well. After listening to Smt. Vedavalli's kAmbhOji, Prasanna's harikAmbhOji and mOhanam and Aishwarya's kEdAragauLa (varNam) and kAmbhOji, TNK's kambhOji, harikAmbhOji and bilahari in quick succession, it was a long string of same and/or related ragams and one just couldnt sit anymore. I m told TNK played mohanam for main.

A great concert. The kEdAram was wonderful fitting the occasion of 'ArudrA darisanam'. the vAra kriti was well presented. The sAvEri and bhairavi were both wonderful. dalachina vAru was moving. The kAmbhOji padam was superb and the kuranji padam was just out of the world was a really rare treat. A touching concert.


Thamarakkadu Govindan Namboodri's concert at Raga sudha hall was awesome. His mAkElarA was perfect and superb. The danyAsi Alapanai and mAyuranAtam were both so wondeful. The aTANA AlApanai and srI kumAra nagarAlayE were awesome. The main was mari mari ninnE left one spellbound. Indeed a great concert.
Thanks to bad health, that was the last concert for me this season.

Its my bad that i missed noting down concert lists and don't remember what was sung in many of them. Hope to have a better season next time. Hope floats!

One was caught in traffic and reached for the darbAr kriti. The stunning rendition of the kAmbhOji navAvarNam made one sit up. This was probably the first and only time, this writer has heard this kriti in a non-thematic concert. And it was rendered so well. The AlApanai of pUrvikalyANi was wonderfully woven. The kriti was rendered with a lot of bhavam and with a fitting round of neraval svarams. After a quick nArAyaNi, Sri Namboodri launched into a leisurely tODi. The AlApanai was elaborate and soothing. The pada varNam was rendered with utmost bhavam and in a fitting kAlapramANam. The rEvagupti kriti was great too.

After all this buildup, it had to be shankarAbaraNam to fit well as the main. The AlApanai was superb. The kriti and neraval, svarams were all outstanding. After a quick bhAgE srI, the husEni padam that he sang, on-request from a rasika in the audience, was very well presented. The suruTTi tillAnA was nice as well.

It was a wonderfully stunning and outstanding concert from the vidwan. The accompanists were very good and gelled well in accompanying and in their responses. It was a concert to remember.
